Mock Dirt Questions 1-3

DIRT

Question 1 - Analyse how sound is used in the extract to create meaning. Refer to at least two examples from the extract in your answer

Sound is used to create tension and suspense in this crime drama.

Firstly, the use of diegetic sound of the first scene of the lawyer picking up the telephone, creating tension to the audience and lawyer as the non-diegetic sound of the music is sow and deep, and this creates tension to the audience.

The ambient diegetic sound of the police radio calling for backup for assistance with a robbery creates a sense of tension for the police officers and audience as they have a sense of worry.

Furthermore, the use of the diegetic sound of Jake Vickers stuttering, "hi guys this is Jake- uh um kilo..uh...windmill", this shows that Jake Vickers is nervous as he isn't experienced as it's his first time working, creating tension for PC Ryan Draper.

Finally,  the use of non-diegetic sound that connotes danger and a sense of the bottom falling out of your world as the large digger breaks through the shop window. This is emphasised by the sudden cut back to the calm, naturalistic sound of the canteen where the officers are having lunch.

Question 2 - Analyse how far the extract depicts the police's point of view rather than the criminals' point of view.

In conclusion, in Propp's terms, the police as a team are the hero, whereas the criminals are depicted as the villain's due to the narrative represented to the police/hero's point of view.

Question 3

  • mise-en-scene - props
  • clothes
  • scenes
  • narrative/themes
  • characters
  • editing
  • sound
Crime is the main action of this extract by the criminals wearing masks to cover their identity from the police, just like many other criminals have done in real life. Showing contrast and similarity real life and fiction.

It's also portraying real life due to the police officer wearing uniform and being in charge as the police sirens show that everyone should move out of the way and let the police through, like real life.

Real life is also portrayed as serious and dangerous due to the high crimes in cuffs. It also portrays Brighton as a rough city as there's a lot of crime in the local towns.

The use of clothes shows that the police officers dress tactically for their job, whereas the druggies where baggy/casual clothing. This shows that police officers dress nicely, whereas if you're lower class you tend to be more casual compared to someone who is in a higher class.

The first scene on a nudist beach shows that the location is set in Brighton, which is a place in real life. It shows that it's the 'city of gays' and tells us that this show is going to have some elements of the homosexual culture.
