The Town of No Return: 60s Essay

How was media language used to show the social context of the 1960s?

Mise-en-scene is used throughout this extract to highlight the focus on the fashion, art and design in this era. This is shown in the clothing Mrs Peel is wearing in this scene, and the decor in her apartment. The eye outside her apartment shows the Pop Art era and how it has influenced our culture on the art scene. Mrs Peel's outfit is leather, which is showing off her body and this shows sexist attitudes as she was holding onto a sword as well. This shows that you can be sexy and independent as the 60s was a time of expressing free love, and that's how they have shown it through her choice of clothing.

Camerawork is used throughout this extract to show the importance of the upper class. This is shown when John Steed is presented when we first see him. The camera angle used was a close up of the doorbell, then tilted to the eye to show 60s representation, then finally, a low angle shot of John Steed. This shows that John Steed is a respectable man with power and he's from the upperclass.

Editing is also used in this extract to show free love in the sixties and how it has impacted on society. This is shown of the zooming out of shot (continuity editing) in the action scene when Mrs Peel, a married woman continuously flirts with Mr Steed when they are both eye line matching with each other. This shows that women often got bored without their husbands around in the 60s, so having her boss who's also a man around might of excited her, and hence the act of free love in the 60s.

Finally, sound is used throughout in this extract to highlight important moments in the scene. This is shown at the start of the scene with the use of non-diegetic music which is happy and calm which could be hinting flirting/romance that's going on. Also, the fact that the music pitch goes higher when the eye opens, meaning that there's something going between both of the main characters. The diegetic dialogue between the characters are flirty and very interaction they had with each other, the non-diegetic music will play happy music, making chemistry evolve around these characters.

Comments

  1. 6/10 Some good observations and links to the question (you are good at representation questions - you have great ideas). TARGET:
    - Use more media terminology throughout (camera/sound/editing/mise-en-scene).
    - Talk in more detail (using media language about certain clips to show you can do a detailed analysis).
