Analysing Magazines

I have created a rock genre music magazine. The primary target audience I am trying to represent through my media language is :
Gender: Either genders
Age:13-29
Ethnicity:English
Social grade:C1-E
Interests: Listening to heavy music.

P1: Masthead
- Words used in the masthead can be Kerrang! These words connote the genre to the target audience because the word 'Kerrang' is an onomatopoeia for the strings on a guitar. This is good because Kerrang is a rock music magazine and the the name suits the genre of magazine.
- The typography style has been used for the masthead is bold and looks a bit worn down/been smash by something. This attracts the target audience because it looks rebellious looking, with the smash-liked font making the audience curious and the capital bold font catches the audiences eye.
-The colour/s have been used in the masthead for Kerrang tend to be black and white. These colours connote to the magazine as dark colours are similar to the theme of rock music. These colours will attract the target audience because it makes it slightly spooky looking but looks quite interesting.

P2: Colour Pallet
- Kerrang use bold colours like black, red, yellow.
-These colours attract the target audience because they stand out to the readers eye making it easy to point Kerrang out of the other magazines.

P3: Layout
- The layout is quite cramped but it looks good.
- This attract the audience because it's full of content for the reader

P4: Images
- The main image of Kerrang is a medium close up so you can see some of what the band is wearing.
- The mise-en-scene in the main image of Kerrang has slights dark lighting to create a shadow. The facial expression is serious or to show that you're "rocking out" as Kerrang is a rock music magazine.
- The image attracts the audience because the image is the biggest thing on the cover so the audience eyes go to that as the first thing they see.
- On the Kerrang magazine there are around 4-8 minor photos. They tend to be a close up of one of the members of the band.
- The minor images attract the audience because it fills out the cover more making the audience think there's more in the magazine. They may also like that artist/band so they would get it for that.

P4: Teasers/Typography/Lexis
- All the images have teasers yo reveal more about the stories in the magazine.
- "Must read reviews" This simple but persuasive.
-The choice of language represents the target audience because it persuading them that they need to read the reviews. This says about the content of magazine that it contains exclusive things that won't in anything.
- There isn't much punctuation in Kerrang magazine as you don't really need it. This attracts the audience because it has short sentences making it easy to read for all ages.

P5: Other Features
- There is a bar code, issue number, price, and date on the Kerrang magazine cover.
- These features are quite small and tend to be at the corner of the magazine.
- They are this size because they want to save space of the actual cover so the audience will buy the magazine.

Comments

  1. A good cover design following many of the indie/Kerrang conventions, well done! Practical target:
    1) Make sure you are following typography style conventions.

  2. Your written analysis of your cover shows a good understanding of how to analysis a cover in terms of how media language is used to attract/represent the target audience. Targets:
    1) Write in full paragraphs not lists.
    2) Use more media terminology.
    3) Use representation theory.
