There are two categories of sound in film diegetic and non- diegetic.
Diegetic is sound the character can hear.
Non- diegetic is sound the characters cannot hear but the audience can (it adds atmosphere/ makes you feel emotions)

Examples
Diegetic: Dialogue, ambient sound and sound effects.
Non- diegetic: Music, voice over and sound effects.
