Gender Stereotypes

David Gauntlett argued in 2008 that males in films are still stereotyped as; 'traditional alpha males who dominate the action with the violence, ' (Gauntlett, 2008) In 1975 Laura Mulvey argued women are used in films as; 'erotic objects of desire for males in the narrative and the males in the audience, ' (Mulvey, 1975) Why do stereotypes work? Because they sell the product and represent the needs of the audience who want to be entertained (Blumer and Katz, 1973).

How is tension and suspense created through media language in the TV scene? The scene sounds of the diegetic sound of thunder and lightning, and a close up shot of a television turning static. This creates tension and suspense because it connotes there is a power cut or ghostly intervention. The scene starts of a close up sound of the girl turning off the television to reveal a man. The diegetic sound comes from the man, which is low. This creates tension and suspense because it connotes that someone is watching her, and a ghost the there which, makes the scene creepy. This scene starts off as a swish-pan to reveal the no one is sitting on the chair and a floating TV remote above the chair. The non-diegetic sound effects creates a swoosh sound as the camera goes into a swish-pan. The camera tilts down and the remote fall’s to the floor.
